Challenge
Surf Lakes International needed a scalable, cost-effective alternative filtration system capable of disinfecting water without the use of chemicals. The challenge had two parts:
- Remove the bacteria associated with algae outbreaks.
- Maintain water quality with a low-cost solution that scales with the recreational facility footprint.
Solution
Blue Quest ran a trial based on a sample supplied to Blue Quest's facility in Brisbane QLD. Sample water was tested in two configurations:
- Stand-alone filtration.
- Clarification combined with filtration.
Implementing a clarification step ahead of filtration improved results by 70% over filtration alone — a clear case for a multi-stage system at the production scale Surf Lakes operates.

Benefits
Multi-stage gains
Multi-barrier, multi-pass system offers significant gains in filtration efficiency. Customers see a reduction in cost from low power and reduced fouling-related issues.
50% CAPEX opportunity
A multi-stage Purus configuration offers up to a 50% reduction in CAPEX against alternative recreational-scale solutions. Lower CAPEX means quicker return on investment and freed-up capital for facility growth.
Smaller footprint, premium land
A smaller filtration plant footprint is a meaningful benefit at a commercial recreational facility, where land at the operation is at premium for guest experience and amenity.
What this proves
For pools, leisure venues, surf parks, water parks and tourism operators dealing with chemical-heavy disinfection regimes — the Purus platform offers a chemical-free path that scales without scaling the plant room.
